The one-day seminar, themed “Seek Common Development, Open Up a Better Future”, closed in Shanghai on Thursday, which discussed to implement the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy and build a broader partnership amid rising protectionism and structural adjustments in different countries.

Currently, BRICS and other emerging economies have seen steadily rising by increasing economic strengths. Stable growth of foreign investments has also brought opportunities to emerging economies including China itself. Emerging economies need Chinese investment, meanwhile, Chinese enterprises need tap overseas markets.

Key word 1: Public Diplomacy

When going global, the Chinese enterprises will face the entire foreign society, not just foreign companies. Thus, whether the Chinese enterprises achieve success will highly depends on the extent of foreigners’ understanding to China.

First, the Chinese enterprises should explore an effective communicative mechanism to express the Chinese voices to the whole world, meanwhile, promote economic cooperation and friendship with other countries.

Second, the Chinese enterprises should undertake responsibilities on public diplomacy. Zhao Qizheng, former Director of China’s State Council Information Office, gave one example during his speech at the opening ceremony of the meeting. He said the Asia Pacific Daily (APD), as a new media platform, currently has more than six million users from 190 countries and regions, and its overseas branches could get touch with foreign governmental officers, which would contribute a lot to Chinese enterprises going global.

Key word 2: Belt and Road Initiative paves way for BRICS

The Belt and Road Initiative, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, and BRICS cooperation represent the general trend of the world. Many countries including other four BRICS countries and other emerging economics have taken part in the initiative. So it is necessary to link up development strategies of BRICS countries with the initiative.

Wang Yiwei, professor of School of International Studies, director of Institution of International Affairs at Renmin University of China, said China, as a nexus between the initiative and the BRICS cooperation, should promote their relations and serve as a bond to make globalization more inclusive, equitable and beneficial to more people.

Zhao Zhongxiu, vice president of University of International Business and Economics, said the initiative should link up the development strategies of BRICS countries, helping them form an integrated industrial system and value chain by upgrading industries.

Key word 3: Chinese experiences

China has always been seeking closer relationship with other BRICS nations. On Jan 1, 2017, China formally took over the rotating president of the BRICS nations, which marks the second ten-year BRICS cooperation, and in September, will host the ninth meeting of BRICS nations in the city of Xiamen to map BRICS new developing blueprint.

BRICS nations are important for Chinese enterprises to integrate into the global economy. The data showed that the population of BRICS occupies 42 percent of the world total, with the GDP, export value accounting for 27 percent and 56 percent of the world total respectively. On one hand, China is an important member of BRICS and an important economic partner. On the other hand, BRICS countries are also popular investment destinations for Chinese enterprises.

In 2016, China’s foreign investment has exceeded 183 billion U.S. dollars, with the 44.1 percent of investment growth rate.

Key word 4: Shanghai

Shanghai, as a new international financial center, hopes to take the New Development Bank as a successful example to promote closer relations with the financial markets of the BRICS countries. All sectors in Shanghai, in particular enterprises and think tanks, have done a lot of works for the BRICS cooperation.

Shanghai highly values the opportunities brought by the BRICS, hoping itself to continue playing a positive role in the cooperation. Since as early as 2008, the very beginning of the international financial crisis, the city has started exploring and strengthening the economic cooperation with emerging markets and developing countries represented by the BRICS countries. Currently, the emerging markets are crucial to Shanghai’s enterprises, and more and more enterprises from the emerging markets have settled in Shanghai. Consensuses on financial cooperation between BRICS nations were also reached in the city in June.

Shanghai values the function of emerging economies on its enterprises going global, welcomes more enterprises from the emerging markets to settle, as well as dedicates to innovating development patterns and advancing financial cooperation and RMB internationalization.

The officials from the Shanghai government and CPPCC Shanghai committee vowed to make greater contributions to implementing “going global” strategy of Chinese enterprises.
