11 U.S. soldiers feared dead in military helicopter crash in Florida

Eleven U.S. soldiers were missing after an army helicopter went down during a training session on Tuesday night in Florida, officials said Wednesday.

The Black Hawk, with seven Marines and four aircrew soldiers on board, was reported missing in foggy conditions at around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday (0030 GMT Wednesday). Debris was discovered Wednesday morning about 45 miles west of U.S. Eglin Air Force Base, according to local media.

Earlier, senior U.S. military officials said all 11 service members were feared dead.

Two helicopters participated in the night training on Tuesday. The other helicopter returned to base safely.

The cause of the crash was still unclear. However, a dense fog advisory was in place for the region around the time when the helicopter was reported missing.

Eglin base spokesman Andy Bourland had earlier ruled out the possibility of the second helicopter getting involved in the incident. Enditem
