India reported more than 4,000 COVID-19 deaths Thursday for the second straight day. The country has put nets up over the Ganges River after more than 100 bodies have been washed up as the nation fights a deadly surge in COVID-19 deaths.

Vaccine shortages force Indian states to suspend vaccination for people between the ages 18 to 44.

The lack of smart phones and internet access has limited vaccine availability in rural areas.

The World Health Organization announced Wednesday that the COVID-19 variant first detected in India has spread to 49 countries.
