**JAKARTA, Oct. 24 (APD) ** — Chinese and Indonesian anti-drug agencies held the initial official meeting here on Tuesday to follow suit mandates of anti-drug cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two governments in May 2012.

The meeting that gathered senior officials from China’s National Narcotics Control Commission (NNCC) and Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN) would served as the cornerstone for following annual meetings held rotatively in the two countries.

Head of NNCC delegation Wei Xiaojun said the initial meeting has formulated the mechanisms for the following meetings, including the appointment of direct contact persons in NNCC and BNN as well related to bilateral anti-drug cooperation.

“The meeting serves as the concrete way to specify contents of our bilateral drug control cooperation in the future,” Wei said on the sidelines of the meetings

Wei added that contents resulted from the first meeting would further specify the guidelines of bilateral cooperation in the sector.

A document, called Implementation Arrangement, containing matters approved by NNCC and BNN delegations during the meeting was signed by Wei Xiaojun and head of Indonesian delegation Arief Wicaksono Sudiutomo.

Arief said that besides approving the mechanism and direct contacts in the two agencies, the two delegations have also identified ways to expand the bilateral cooperation in drug control, among others through capacity building program and extending the cooperation into ASEAN level.

Arief added that Indonesia may invite NNCC to take part in the activities of ASEAN Airport Interdiction Task Force (AAITF), the Southeast Asia’s regional bloc’s organization tasked to tackle illicit drug distribution through commercial flights in the region.

BNN and NNCC had previously established intensive cooperation through intelligence information exchanges, resulted in fruitful drug trafficker crackdowns in Indonesia, Arief, who serves as BNN Legal and International Cooperation deputy, said.

“Ast least 7 successful crackdowns against drug traffickers in Indonesia were resulted from China’s information since 2012,” Arief said.

Among the the successful operations assisted by in formation from China was the recent 300-kilogram crystal meth smuggling in Jakarta’s seaport and another attempt to smuggle 1 ton of the same drugs in Serang, Banten province in July.

According to Arief, before the current meeting BNN and NNCC officials had previously met several times in international anti-drug meeting and exchanged intelligence information related to respective countries’s efforts to tackle illegal drug trafficking.

BNN Chief Budi Waseso had visited NNCC office in Beijing August last year to further strengthen bilateral anti-drug cooperation, he added.
