India: 19 Delhi monuments to be restored every year

NEW DELHI, March 26 (APD) - Nineteen historically important, yet lesser known monuments have been identified by the provincial archaeology department in Delhi to undergo restoration work.

The work is expected to begin by the end of March and will be carried out by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. According to reports, the cost of the restoration will be around 70 million rupees.

The 19 monuments selected are located in LadoSarai, VasantVihar, Sundar Nagar, Savitri Nagar, Kaka Nagar, Mehrauli, RK Puram, and NangalDevat Village in Delhi.

Of the monuments, the most significant are— minaret in Hastsal Village, KharboozekaGumbad, and tombs of Mir Taqi and SayyidAbid.

Initially, 238 structures that needed conservation were identified, however it was resolved that of them 19 will berestored every year. The project started about 10 years ago and so far around 50 small and big monuments in Delhi have been restored.

The department of archaeology has entered into an agreement with the Indian National Trust for Artand Cultural Heritage to accomplish the work.

However, there are various challenges that confront the restoration workers, one of them is of illegal occupants. Currently, several court cases are going on to remove illegal occupants from some monuments.

Sometimes, paucity of information about the monuments also proves to be a problem. Without knowing the construction date of the monument, restoration work gets difficult.
