"Bad Grandpa" seizes top place at North American box

This weekend's debut "Jackass: Bad Grandpa" shot to the top of North America box office chart, while the weekend's another debut, Twentieth Century Fox's Ridley Scott vanity project "The Counselor" only opened the fourth place.

The Paramount/MTV Films' comedy "Jackass: Bad Grandpa" is estimated to take in 32 million U.S. dollars worth of ticket sales from 3,336 theaters in the United States and Canada, finishing in the top slot. But this gross is far less than 2010's "Jackass 3-D" opening weekend of 50.4 million dollars.

The film earned a "B" CinemaScore from first-night moviegoers and won over 62 percent of critics, according to reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Finishing in second slot is "Gravity", a Warner Bros. astronaut adventure starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney with a 20.3 million dollars weekend. It is on track for a 200 million dollar gross over four weeks.

Opening in third place is "Captain Phillips", a sea pirates drama, which takes in 11.8 million dollars in tickets this weekend and a 70-million-dollar three-week total.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the United States and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios, were "The Counselor" (8 million U.S. dollars), "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2" (6.1 million), "Carrie" (5.9 million), "Escape Plan" (4.4 million), "12 Years a Slave" (2.1 million), "Enough Said" (1. 6 million), and "Prisoners" (1 million).
