IATA calls for new COVID-19 testing regime at airports

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), is calling for mandatory COVID-19 testing for all passengers on foreign departures. The trade association for the world's airlines says airport testing is the only workable alternative to the current quarantine regime, which it claims is "killing the industry's recovery" from the impact of the coronavirus. The announcement comes amid fears of a possible second wave of pandemic infections across Europe.

Speaking to CGTN, Alexandre de Juniac, IATA's Director General and CEO, warned of the impact the ongoing uncertainty was having on the airline sector: "Already we are experiencing a very tough situation… these quarantine measures are blocking the restart of air traffic completely."

IATA claims effective tests could be in place at a cost of around $10 per passenger, giving results within fifteen minutes before an individual departs. De Juniac believes testing passengers on arrival is putting off potential customers who may face lengthy periods in self-isolation as a result. Pointing to the affordability and efficacy of the new commercially available tests, de Juniac added, "nobody wants to travel if there is a risk of quarantine, either at their destination or when they fly home."
