New Delhi, Dec 28, (APD) - After 145 days of no internet on mobile phones in the Kargil area of the former province of Jammu and Kashmir, internet services have been restored.

Internet services on mobile phones had been cut in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5, when the Indian government revoked the special status of the former province and imposed security restrictions throughout it.

Kargil, a district in Ladakh and now a separate union territory is strategically important to India as it is close to the India-Pakistan border.

The news of restoring the internet in Kargil comes three days after the government decided to withdraw 7,000 paramilitary troops from Kashmir.

Earlier, speaking in the Indian parliament, Home Minister Amit Shah had informed the upper house, Rajya Sabha that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was “normal contrary to widespread belief.”

He had further informed that the provincial government would release the leaders in detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the central government would not intervene in the decision.

Shah had also assured then that internet services will be restored soon when the security situation is better.
