At least nine people, including two minors, were killed and 11 others injured early Monday when two pickup trucks collided in Mexico's northeast state of San Luis Potosi, official sources said.

The accident took place around 7:30 a.m. local time (1230 GMT) on a highway between the towns of Villa Juarez and Cerritos, the state Public Security Secretariat said on Twitter.

The crash between a white Ford pickup and a red Ford Ranger could have been caused by thick fog that blanketed the highway and excessive speed, according to preliminary reports.

"The governor has instructed authorities to provide the victims of the accident with every support," the secretariat said. It also posted images showing an official helicopter at the crash site prepared to airlift the injured to a medical facility.

The injured were taken to a hospital in the city of Rioverde, located 136 km from the state capital San Luis Potosi. Enditem
