Indian security forces killed around 15 people by unleashing "massive retaliation" Tuesday along the International Border in Indian-controlled Kashmir's Jammu area over what they called unprovoked firing by Pakistani forces, said local media Thursday.

The Indian attack targeted 37 Pakistani border posts, killing around 15 people on the Pakistan side of the border, and injuring more than 30 while inflicting serious damage to outposts manned by the Pakistani Rangers troopers, the Hindustan Times quoted intelligence sources as saying.

Six people have been killed on the Indian side of the border in Kashmir over the past two days by Pakistani shelling, said Indian military and police.

India and Pakistan share 200 km of international border 700 km of Line-of-Control according to an agreement demarcating the lines in 1972.

The newspaper said a terse eight-minute phone conversation between the Indian and Pakistani deputy directors of the directorate general of military operations ended with both sides trading accusations of ceasefire violations.

India said Pakistan has been violating ceasefire in Kashmir since Oct. 1, while Pakistan accused India of violating the 2003 truce.

Pakistanis Tuesday also responded to Indian shelling by firing on several outposts of Indian security forces and army.

India has vowed to give fitting response to Pakistan if attacked amid renewed tension between the two countries.
