A young boy has been arrested in connection with a stabbing case Monday, killing a 61-year-old teacher at a school in Leeds, local authorities said.

West Yorkshire Police said in a statement that at 11:48 a.m., police received a report from the ambulance service that a teacher has been stabbed at Corpus Christi Catholic College, in Neville Road, Leeds. The school currently has a roll of about 1,000 students.

"The 61-year-old female member of staff was taken to hospital for treatment but was subsequently pronounced dead," the statement updated, adding that the 15-year-old male pupil was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody this evening.

"This is clearly a very shocking and unprecedented incident for Leeds, which has understandably had a massive impact on staff and pupils at the school and on the wider community," said chief superintendent Paul Money, Leeds District Commander.

He said the woman teacher was stabbed by a male pupil within the school building, while the incident was witnessed by other pupils who raised the alarm. The suspect was detained by school staff on the premises before police and paramedics arrived at the school.

"This is now a murder enquiry and, as people would expect, a full and detailed investigation is underway," the chief superintendent said.

"We anticipate this will cause some significant disruption to the operation of the school but we will maintain close liaison with the school and the local authority to ensure that is kept to a minimum, although clearly the needs of the investigation will have to come first," the chief superintendent added.

Local reports said that the victim was a Spanish teacher, named Anne Maguire, while the name of the suspect is unknown.

Students and residents have been seen laying floral tributes at the gates of the school.
