Mainland chief negotiator Chen Deming called for greater cross-Strait cooperation in the face of global economic competition when meeting with Honorary Kuomintang Chairman Wu Po-hsiung in Taipei on Monday, the seventh day of his eight-day trip to the island.

At the invitation of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation, Chen led a business delegation including mainland officials, heads of industrial parks and enterprises in visiting the island starting on Nov. 26.

The delegation visited air and sea ports, industrial and science parks as well as enterprises in several cities on the island, including Taipei, Pingtung, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Hsinchu.

"I found after the visit that the mainland's and Taiwan's economies are complementary, and I saw a lot of business opportunities," Chen said.

He suggested the island make full use of the manufacturing and processing capacity of the mainland while turning Taiwan into a hub for research and development as well as international marketing.

"The mainland and Taiwan are mutually beneficial," Chen said.

Wu said in his speech that the current development of the cross-Strait relationship is"hard-won," calling for both sides to cherish it and to steadily move it forward.
