Young women wearing berets were conspicuous across the venues for the Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo’s 2017 Spring/Summer show held mainly in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo from Oct. 17 to 22, and surrounding areas. The round shape of the beret has softened the impression of this season’s clothes.

The bright yellow beret worn by Arisa Doi, an entertainer who attended the Yuma Koshino brand’s fashion show, particularly stood out. Doi, 25, said, “I like berets as they create a cute style.”

A 22-year-old university student from Suginami Ward, Tokyo, matched a moss green beret with a retro floral-print dress. She said she owns seven berets, including white, brown and dark red. “The good thing about berets is that I can look fashionable just by wearing one,” she said.'

A 20-year-old student at a vocational training school from Musashino, Tokyo, wore a dark-colored beret accentuated by many rings in the fabric. She combined it with a khaki jacket and a black top. The pair of sunglasses hanging from the ring zipper of her top was an attractive touch.

Various clothing items pair well with berets. Fashion journalist Rie Miyata said: “Berets [are associated] with a variety of images as they are part of a military uniform and are worn by painters. People can create various looks by wearing a beret, such as military, intellectual, classic and youthful.”
Although berets are standard fashion items for autumn and winter, the variety available has increased since last year to include ones made of fur or with charms attached.

Last year, wide-brimmed hats were popular. Miyata explained why berets have become popular this year. “Brim-less and compact berets balance well with the voluminous clothes in fashion this year.”
Berets are usually made out of felt. Many women said simply putting one on can create an autumnal look. Such ease has likely captured the hearts of fashion-conscious women.
