Daughter of Park's confidante arrested en route to South Korea

The daughter of Choi Soon-sil, the confidante of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye who was at the center of the 2016 corruption scandal, was arrested on Wednesday en route from Denmark to South Korea, according to Yonhap News Agency.

21-year-old Chung Yoo-ra’s mother Choi was accused of interfering in government affairs as Park's confidante. Chung is reported to have received preferential treatment in enrolling and graduating at Seoul’s prestigious Ewha Womans University.

She also allegedly received money from South Korean conglomerate Samsung, which went towards her equestrian training and a luxurious lifestyle in Europe.

She was arrested on board a Korean Air flight departing from a transit point in Amsterdam after being extradited from Denmark, according to the Korean Herald.

She is due to arrive in South Korea on Wednesday at 3 p.m. local time, escorted by five security officials. Upon arrival she is expected to be taken to Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office for questioning.

On January 1 this year, Chung was arrested in Aalborg, Denmark for illegal stay, and had been held at a detention center. Her extradition was not approved by the Danish government until last week.
