Priest in Maute Group captivity rescued by Philippine troops

MANILA, SEP 17 (APD) - Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza said Fr. Teresito "Chito" Suganob, Vicar General of the Prelature of Marawi has been rescued by Philippine troops near a mosque in Bato, Marawi City.

"He was rescued with another individual at about 11:00 PM Saturday," Dureza said in a phone interview.

Mr. Dureza would not release other details because military operations are still going on hoping to rescue other hostages.

Fr. Chito was held hostage by the ISIS-inspired Maute Group early evening of May 23, 2017 when they launched an attack on Marawi City including the St. Mary's Cathedral.

Bishop Edwin dela Pena, Fr. Suganob's immediate superior left for Rome to address a conference with Cotabato Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo which ended yesterday.
