ISLAMABAD, Aug. 8 (APD) -- Pakistan on Tuesday lodged a protest with India over unprovoked firing by Indian forces at the Line of Control in Kashmir region in which a civilian was killed and another injured, officials said.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner, JP Singh, in Islamabad and condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations by the occupation forces in Khuiratta and Karela Sector of Pakistan administered Jammu and Kashmir region on Monday, a statement said.

The foreign office said the firing resulted in the killing of a 35-year old woman, and injury to another woman.

Pakistan and India had declared a ceasefire in 2003 along the LoC, which divides Jammu & Kashmir region between the two sides.

“Indian occupation forces fired along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir region. The deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws," Mohammad Faisal, the Director General at the South Asian Desk in Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, told Singh.

According to statistics released by Pakistan army, Indian forces have carried out more than 600 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, resulting in the killing of 25 innocent civilians and injuries up to 110 since January this year.

Pakistan foreign office said despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations, and also did 382 ceasefire violations in 2016.

Pakistan urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 Ceasefire arrangement; investigate this and other incidents of ceasefire violations; instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire, in letter and spirit and maintain peace along the LoC.

Pakistan official also urged that the Indian side should permit United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan informed the National Assembly (the lower house) of Pakistan Parliament on Monday that Indian troops have killed 66 civilians and left 228 others injured by unprovoked firing and shelling since January 2013.
