As everyone knows, Hamlet is one of the Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Based on the original work, the Shanghai Ballet choreographed the show in 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of the late legendary playwright.

On June 24 and June 25, ballet Hamlet performed on the stage of the National Center for the Performing Arts, which is the debut of the show outside Shanghai.

The Shanghai Ballet, together with the Shanghai Grand Theatre, offers a new interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy by graceful dance language. The performance interprets the thoughts, feelings, and desires of the leading characters, and presents them in the form of contemporary ballet.

The international creation team did great works.

The choreographer Derek Deane, the former artistic director of English National Ballet (ENB) and the ENB School, creates ballets that are strongly theatrical, and often contains exquisite emotions. Deane is especially good at using the classical ballet language to probe into inner souls of the characters. He mixed modern and contemporary ballet styles in the Hamlet.

Lez Brotherston, a popular UK production designer and costume designer, designed the set and costumes. He especially designed black suit and jeans for the Prince so as to distinguish with other characters.

Wu Husheng, one of the Chinese best dancers, played the Prince, the leading actor of the Hamlet. The excellent dancer who has won many awards domestic and abroad also starred in the ballet Swan Lake.

The famous UK composer Michael England created the music for the ballet. Cooperating with the Shanghai Opera House Orchestra, the Chinese young conductor Zhang Chengjie directed the Beijing performances.

The ballet is scheduled to perform at the New Tsinghua Xuetang, one of the landmarks of the Tsinghua University, on June 29 and June 30.

The production has won warm applauses and appreciations from both the audience and the insiders. In 2016, it received the “dance drama prize” of the 10th Lotus Awards Chinese National Dance competition, the highest honor for Chinese dance production.
