Tianjin starts compensating people injured in blasts

The government of Tianjin has started to compensate people injured in the warehouse explosions there last month, local authorities said on Tuesday.

Six hundred people are eligible for the compensation. It will be given according to the severity of the injuries and the degree of impact on the victims' lives, said sources with the Human Resources and Social Security Bureau of Binhai New Area, where the blasts occurred.

Medical treatment is also free for the injured.

The blasts killed 165 people, including 99 firefighters and 11 police officers. Eight people, mainly firefighters, are still missing. More than 100 of the injured people remain in hospital.

The family of each dead fireman has received 2.3 million yuan (about 361,300 US dollars) in compensation.
