Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tuesday that Iran has fought well against the novel coronavirus outbreak despite U.S. sanction pressures, Tehran Times daily reported.

"Despite U.S. sanctions, Iran has made significant progress in fighting the pandemic, thanks to its human and scientific resources, and friends abroad," Zarif was quoted as saying.

The novel coronavirus outbreak was an opportunity for the United States to kick its addiction to sanctions, Zarif said, adding that however, Washington failed to do so.

Iran on Tuesday reported a total of 74,877 COVID-19 cases, of whom 4,683 have died.
