MANILA, June 17 (APD) – The surge in sales of commercial vehicles and passenger cars was marked with a 20.2% increase in its May 2019 sales compared to April and a 1.2% increase than the same period last year.

Atty. Rommel Gutierrez, Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) president said the joint report from his group and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) revealed the sale of 30,998 units last May, or 5,199 more than the sales in April of 25,799 units.

Atty. Gutierrez said the double-digit sales growth to recovery to the long holidays in April, strong promotional campaigns and new model launches that auto companies announced in time for the summer season and the mid-term elections.

“More than a slight positive uptick, May 2019 saw double-digit growth reminiscent of the auto industry’s impressive performance two years ago. If this trend continues, we can say that the market has already adjusted or even recovered from certain factors that have been affecting care sales since 2018,” Atty. Gutierrez said.

Commercial vehicles’ sales reached 21,945 units at 21% improvement as against April’s. The top three brands with the highest sales remain to be Toyota Motor Philippines with 13,889 units, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines with 5,075 units, and Nissan Philippines with 3,840 units.

Passenger cars also showed signs of a strong comeback with 9,053 units sold last May, 18.17% higher than April’2 7,661 units.

On a year-to-date basis, CAMPI members sold a total of 142,`85 units, same level as of January to May 2018 sales of 142,240 units.

“At the start of the year, we saw a big gap in sales versus last year. As we move forward, we can see positive signs of recovery. Our May year-to-date sales are already at par with last year’s figures and with stable economic trends, we are optimistic to end the year with market growth,” Gutierrez further said.
