A takeaway in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is making burgers with a twist. The burger buns is crafted to look like the coronavirus. And those who make them hopes the idea will make people happier as the COVID-19 continue spreading.

“Amid the bad news about COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to make Coronaburgers to make people feel happier”, said Dang Van Khu, a staff of Pizza Home.

According to him, sweet leaves are crushed and turned into liquid. It is then mixed with flour to make a green-coloured dough. Tiny pieces are carefully added to make the COVID-19 spikes. The buns are baked until they are golden.

“The most difficult part is to make the burger bun shaped like the coronavirus, ensuring it both looks good and tastes like a traditional burger. We have to be very dedicate from mixing and and kneading the dough,” said Khu.

Burger fans are loving unusually shaped buns. Since the shop started selling this type of cake, about 50 burgers are bought a day. The sales increased by up to 5 percent.

“If the virus is getting you down, pick yourself up with a coronaburger,” the burger maker delivered the message.

Earlier, an old woman who owns a famous “banh cuon” (steamed roll rice pancake) restaurant in Hanoi also launched the pancakes made from red dragon fruit as an effort to support farmers who were unable to export dragon fruit to China due to COVID-19.

“I saw many people rescuing agricultural products to help farmers, so I bought red dragon fruit. Many people encouraged me to try making dragon fruit steamed roll rice pancakes, and I began to experiment”, said Duong Thi Hanh, 71, the restaurant owner.

According to Hanh, after being washed and chopped, red dragon fruit is pureed with a blender and then mixed with clean water to make a red mixture. Then, the flour and water are mixed with dragon fruit juice in a ratio that creates a beautiful pink.

She shared that following several unsuccessful attempts at making the red dragon fruit pancakes, she drew an appropriate formula. The most important stage is the selection of sweet dragon fruit with beautiful colour.

Although the stages are not too complicated, it is essential to have a special secret to make beautiful and delicious steamed roll rice pancakes, she revealed, adding the thin and soft rice paper, fragrant meat fillings and delicious dipping sauces are important factors in making steamed roll rice pancakes.

In addition to steamed meat roll rice pancakes, Hanh also makes steamed egg roll rice pancakes with dragon fruit.

The steamed roll rice pancakes with red dragon fruit has a slightly sweet taste and should be eaten while hot, making the restaurant more attractive to diners, including foreigners.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant damage to Vietnam's agricultural sector. Many types of agricultural products such as watermelon, dragon fruit, durian, jackfruit, chili and cabbage, were left in large quantities and could not be sold because exports were delayed. The selling price of these agricultural products also dropped dramatically.

Amid the situation, many Vietnamese businesses and individuals have researched to create new products from fruits to boost consumption of agricultural products affected by the epidemic.

Accordingly, agricultural products that need to be "rescued" such as dragon fruit and watermelon have become raw materials to create different types of vermicelli and cakes. The use of dragon fruit and watermelon to produce cakes has become a trend that is responded by businesses and individuals. Such products as dragon fruit and watermelon bread, watermelon vermicelli, dragon fruit pizza and dumpling are popular for their delicious and unique flavors.
