8 killed in Indonesia’s N. Kalimantan boat capsize

**JAKARTA, Jan. 1 (APD) ** — At least 8 passengers were killed with several others were still missing in a speedboat capsize in Indonesia’s North Kalimantan province on Monday morning, a rescue said.

The boat, Anugerah Express, capsized around 8.30 a.m. shortly after departed from Tanjung Selor port located in Kayang River on its way to the province’s

major city of Tarakan.

Gusti Anwar Mulyadi said the joint rescuer team has saved 33 persons from the ill-fated speed boat as of noon.

“We are yet to find out the things that led to the accident. Were are still focusing on search efforts to find the missing ones,” he said.

The saved passengers and bodies found in the capsized speed boat have been evacuated to Tanjung Selor regional hospital for further treatment and identification processes.

He added that further

efforts to search and find those who were missing in the mishap were still underway at present, carried out by the Basarnas, police, military personnel and volunteers.

The latest deadly incident was the second one to occur in the same route.

The previous one took place in July last year, claimed 10 lives with some others missing from a total 55 people onboard the capsized Rezeki Baru Kharisma speedboat.
