China has always been on the side of peace and will continue playing a constructive role with the international community on the Ukraine issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday at a news briefing.

From September 23-27, four regions in Ukraine voted to join Russia, prompting the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency special session after voting began.

In response, Wang reiterated that China has always maintained that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be observed, the legitimate security concerns of all parties should be taken seriously and all efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully should be supported.

As the core of the international collective security mechanism, the United Nations Security Council should make good use of the mediation tools granted by the charter, follow the right direction of ending war and promoting peace and take constructive and responsible action to create conditions and room for a political settlement, Wang said
