Bayern Munich have suffered a huge blow as their lethal striker Robert Lewandowski will be sidelined for a month after suffering a knee injury during the second leg of their Champions League tie against Chelsea.

The Bundesliga giants announced in a statement on Wednesday that the Polish striker had "fractured the tibia where it meets the left knee joint" following medical tests by the club's chief medical officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.

"After 10 days of being immobilized in plaster, build-up training will begin. The total downtime will be around four weeks," Bayern added.

The 31-year-old showed incredible form this season, having scored 39 goals in just 33 appearances for Bayern. He assisted both of Serge Gnabry's goals and netted a third as Bayern outclassed Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

If the four-week prognosis is accurate, he will sit out the return leg against the Blues in Munich, league games against Hoffenheim, Augsburg, Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt, as well as the DFB-Pokal quarterfinal clash with Schalke 04 on March 3.

Bayern now sit at the top of the Bundesliga with 49 points, with RB Leipzig just one point behind.
