Senior Chinese and US officials have agreed that the two countries should handle their economic and trade frictions in a cooperative rather than confrontational manner, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Liu He, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the General Office of the Central Leading Group for Financial and Economic Affairs, met with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, White House National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer during his visit to the United States from Tuesday to Saturday.

Liu told US officials that Chinese and American economies are mutually complementary, stressing that there is great potential for economic cooperation between the two sides.

He called on the two countries to work towards "dynamic balance" in bilateral economic and trade relations to benefit both Chinese and American people.

China will take further measures to comprehensively deepen reform and open its market, Liu said.

The two sides have agreed to continue with their communication on relevant issues in Beijing in the near future, the Xinhua report said.

"The two sides had candid exchange on key issues in bilateral economic and trade relations, which would create necessary conditions for in-depth cooperation going forward," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing on Friday.
