At least six people travelling in a car were killed Monday after a goods truck collided with it in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The accident took place near Hafiz Ganj in Bareilly district, about 300 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"Early today in a collision between truck and a car here, six people were killed on the spot," a police official said. "The deceased were travelling in the ill-fated car."

Police immediately reached the spot and removed bodies to a nearest medical facility, where health officials would carry a post-mortem on them.

Locals said the recklessly driven speeding truck hit the car.

According to police, all the six deceased were doing the catering work and returning home in adjacent Pilibhit district.

Police have registered a case and initiated investigations into the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
