A Hamas militant was killed and several others were injured in a shelling by Israel that targeted a group of Hamas gunmen in the southeastern part of the Gaza Strip, security sources and witnesses said Thursday.

The Hamas-run interior ministry said the shelling targeted militants east of Khan Younis city, which Israel's tanks and bulldozers entered in a sudden incursion.

The strikes killed a 21-year-old Hamas militant, Rabi Baraka, and wounded two others, one in critical condition, according to medical sources.

Israeli media reports said the army struck the gunmen as they were preparing to detonate an explosive device near an Israeli tank.

On Monday, an Israeli F-16 war jet struck rocket launchers shortly after some Gaza militants fired two rockets into southern Israel.

The airstrike is the first of its kind in about two months, as Israel and Hamas, the Islamic movement controlling Gaza, are observing a ceasefire, despite it being shaky.
