A British mother was given a six-year jail sentence on Monday for taking her child to join the Islamic S in Syria, local police said.

Tareena Shakil, 26, boarded a plane to Turkey in October 2014 with her one-year-old son. She then entered Syria and spent three months there, said West Midlands Police.

Shakil left Syria and returned to Britain on Feb. 18, 2015, when she was arrested by counter-terrorism officers at Heathrow Airport.

Although the young woman denied joining the IS, counter-terrorism officers and detectives have proved her membership with IS and was set to become a jihadi bride through investigation.

She was found guilty of being a member of a proscribed organization (IS) and encouraging acts of terrorism at Birmingham Crown Court last Friday.

Shakil, from Birmingham, is the first woman in Britain to return from the self-declared caliphate to be convicted of the offence. Her child was taken into state care.

Monday's conviction comes just weeks after British police service, including officers in the West Midlands, launched a new film urging mothers to prevent further tragedies by taking steps to prevent their daughters travelling to Syria.

Figure released by police showed that 56 women and girls were reported missing to the police by their families in 2015, all feared to have traveled to Syria. Enditem
