A teenager was fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies when he was trying to stop an aggressive dog from attacking the officers on Thursday, authorities said.

The 17-year-old boy was accidentally struck by a "skip round" ricocheting bullet as deputies shot at a pit bull that had attacked one of the deputies, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The incident occurred about 3:47 a.m. and the boy, identified by his aunt as Armando Garcia, died at 4:28 a.m. at a local hospital.

Deputies said they initially responded to a report of loud music at a party at the 38500 block of 10th Street East in Palmdale. One of the deputies was attacked and bitten in the leg by a 60 to 65 pound male adult pit bull when they were conducting an investigation at the scene.

"As they were waiting for medical treatment to arrive, the pit bull came from the rear carport area location, and again charged deputies," sheriff's Capt. Christopher Bergner was quoted as saying by City News Service.

"At that point, two deputies engaged the dog in gunfire," he added.

The boy was struck in the chest as he tried to pull the dog away.

"We believe that when the teen came out from behind the building, which was approximately 40 feet away from where the shooting occurred, he may have been struck by one of these skip rounds ... an extremely, extremely unfortunate incident," said Bergner.

The deputy who had been bitten by the pit bull was also struck by a bullet fragment and rushed to the hospital.

The dog was shot but survived and was placed in the custody of animal control officers.
