Eleven people arrested for vandalism of Kenya’s new multi-billion-dollar Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) on Friday have been charged with sabotage, destruction of infrastructure and engaging in organized criminal activity, Kenyan newspaper the Business Daily reported.

Seven of the accused were charged with dealing in scrap metal without a license less than two weeks after the launch of the first phase of the SGR, a Chinese-funded project expected to significantly ease movement of people and goods between Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa and the capital Nairobi.

The 11 appeared before Mombasa senior principal magistrate Lillian Tsuma Lewa and denied the charges.

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Alexander Muteti opposed the release of the accused on bail.

Muteti said the timing of the destruction showed intent to sabotage the launch of the railway service.

He further argued that the accused may be tempted to escape if bailed. The offence of sabotage can be punished with life imprisonment upon conviction in Kenya.

“The nature of the offence the accused face is a key consideration when courts grants bail,” said Muteti, adding that the destruction of infrastructure is a threat to the economy.

The accused allegedly committed the crime on May 26 in Mwavumbo, Kwale County.

The court will deliver a ruling on Monday about whether they will be released on bail or not.
