A civilian was killed and four others wounded Saturday during violent clashes between government forces and locals following militant killings in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The killing took place after the government forces fired upon protesters in village Litter of Pulwama district, about 47 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Intense clashes broke out at village where two local militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) including a commander was killed on morning in a gunfight with contingents of Indian police and army.

"We received five people. One had succumbed, while as four others were brought in wounded condition," a health official at Pulwama district hospital said. "Of them, two were hit by bullets and two with pellets."

Locals, however, said several people were wounded during clashes.

On Wednesday two militants and two air force personnel were killed in a fierce gunfight in Bandipora district of the region.

A separatist movement and guerrilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
