U.S. President Barack Obama met Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko in Warsaw on Wednesday.

It is Obama's first meeting with Poroshenko, who was elected president of Ukraine on May 25 and who will be officially sworn in on June 7.

The U.S. president said he discussed a plan of bringing back peace and economic growth to Ukraine with Poroshenko. The presidents also discussed ways to reduce Ukraine's energy dependence on Russia.

Poroshenko said, "I want to thank the president for the support in our initiative in reforming the energy sector," while highlighting "future cooperation in the anti-corruption deal" as "crucially important."

Before the meeting with Obama, Poroshenko met U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
