Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) named K Muralidharan Pillai as its candidate for the Bukit Batok by-election on Monday.

Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam formally introduced PAP's candidate at a press conference at the party's Bukit Batok branch.

Tharman, who is a Member of Parliament for Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC), said that Muralidharan knows Bukit Batok and its people well, and works well with everyone, totally dedicated to residents.

"I've known Murali for the last 15 years and I have the highest regard for him." added Tharman.

Muralidharan, 48, was part of the PAP team that nearly wrested Aljunied GRC back at General Election last year.

Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) is the only opposition party that has confirmed it will contest the Bukit Batok by-election so far. SDP chief Chee Soon Juan will be the party's candidate.

David Ong, former Member of Parliament for Bukit Batok, resigned due to "personal indiscretions" on March 12. Enditem
