Inclusive growth set to be key issue at 2017 G7 summit

A two-day G7 summit is set to kick off in Taormina, a small town on the Italian island of Sicily, on May 26. It will bring together US President Donald Trump, France’s new president Emmanuel Macron and leaders of Japan, Germany, Italy, the UK and Canada. The theme is building foundations of renewed trust through citizens' safety, sustainability and jobs.

This bloc of nations makes up 32.2 percent of global GDP, and its actions can have a big impact on shaping the world. One of the key issues set to be discussed is inclusive growth, and the concept that inequality can be tackled through better social and educational opportunities, that would in turn, get more people back in work.

A meeting of G7 Energy Ministers in Rome in April ended without a joint statement. The United States chose not to endorse a text that reaffirmed the bloc's commitment to the Paris climate change agreement and the clean energy transition. Therefore, all eyes will turn towards President Trump to see if he will pull out of the US commitment to the global agreement to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
