At least nine people have died after a toxic gas leak at a construction site on Monday in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident happened when a man lost consciousness while working on a reservoir near his home on Monday morning in Tangna Village, Pingguo County.

Another eight villagers went down to the reservoir pit to rescue him, but also fell unconscious at the scene.

An emergency rescue team arrived at the construction site and sent the nine people to hospital. However, all of them were later confirmed dead after breathing in the deadly gas.

According to a preliminary investigation, the poisonous gas was produced under high temperatures, after the reservoir had been closed for 32 days.
