Thousands of rats have threatened local people and devoured plants in Nga Pu Taw township in Myanmar's south-western Ayeyarwady region since Sunday, local media reported Tuesday.

The rats were found in compounds of 20 houses located near coast in Zee Chai village in Nga Pu Taw Township.

Over 800 rats have been killed and the rest have run into the nearby forest, according to the local people.

Local people are concerned about diseases caused by rats.

For checking harmful viruses and bacteria, the dead are sent to National Health Laboratory in Yangon, according to Health Department in Ayeyarwady region.

Health centers have been opened for great care and strict treatment to local people in threatening areas for about 10 days.

The authorities are exerting efforts to find out the reasons of rats entering the villages. Heavy rain and high sea level carrying earthquake and storm might be reasons, local people said.

In accordance with the Ministry of Information, rats also entered some villages in Haigyi Island in Ayeyarwady and over 1,600 rats have been killed.

In 2004, rats devoured things at villages in Pathein, capital of Ayeyarwady region, due to the lack of food, but no one suffered from disease caused by rats.
