The Pentagon's acting undersecretary of defense for policy, James Anderson, resigned on Tuesday a day after President Donald Trump fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

According to The Hill, the resignation of Anderson opens the possibility that Anthony Tata, President Trump's pick for the job, may step into the role.

The White House had been expected by some to ask Anderson to resign from his position due to disagreements with its personnel office.

Anderson was confirmed in June to be deputy undersecretary for policy, but he has been the acting policy head since John Rood resigned in February.
