Turkey issues detention warrants for 88 over suspected coup links

Turkish prosecutors on Friday issued detention warrants for 88 people, including 40 soldiers in active service, over their alleged links to a group accused of orchestrating a coup attempt in 2016.

Police launched simultaneous operations in 33 provinces across the country to catch the suspects upon the order of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in the western city of Izmir, the Cumhuriyet daily said.

So far, 52 of the suspects have been detained, Cumhuriyet said, without revealing further details about the accusations against them.

The Turkish government blames the U.S.-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen and his network for the coup bid in July 2016, in which 250 people were killed.
