The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK -- Global COVID-19 cases surpassed 21 million on Friday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The global case count reached 21,020,216, with a total of 761,393 deaths worldwide as of 3:27 p.m. local time (1927 GMT), the CSSE data showed.

The United States reported the most COVID-19 cases and deaths, standing at 5,280,315 and 167,948, respectively. Brazil recorded 3,224,876 cases and 105,463 deaths, followed by India with more than 2.4 million cases.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon's number of COVID-19 infections increased on Friday by 334 to 8,045 while death toll went up by two to 94, the Health Ministry said.

The Lebanese health sector has been facing tough challenges following the explosions that rocked Beirut on Aug. 4, killing at least 177 people and wounding over 6,000 others.

Hospitals could not offer services to all injured people prompting foreign countries to send field hospitals to help treating the injured and receiving COVID-19 patients.

RABAT -- Morocco on Friday reported 1,306 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections in the country to 39,241.

The number of recoveries from the coronavirus in Morocco increased to 27,644 after 957 more were added, while the death toll rose by 27 to 611, said Mouad Mrabet, coordinator of the Moroccan Center for Public Health Operations at the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, 163 patients are in intensive care units.

DAMASCUS -- The Syrian Health Ministry said 83 new COVID-19 cases were reported in government-controlled areas on Friday.

With the new cases, a total of 1,515 infections have been registered in government-controlled areas in Syria since March, according to the health ministry.

China has offered help to Syria to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

MUSCAT -- The Omani Ministry of Health on Friday announced 212 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally of infections in the country to 82,743.

The ministry said in a statement that the total recoveries from the virus rose by 149 to 77,427, while the death toll hit 557 after six more deaths were added.

The disease recovery rate in Oman was 93.6 percent.

JERUSALEM -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Israel has reached 91,080, with 1,258 new cases, the Israeli Ministry of Health said on Friday.

The ministry said that the death toll in the country reached 665, with 14 new deaths, while the number of patients in serious condition increased from 371 to 375, out of 783 patients currently hospitalized.

The number of recoveries reached 66,965, with 2,219 new ones, while the number of active cases dropped to 23,450.

ATHENS -- The Greek government announced on Friday more measures to contain the spread of coronavirus after a spike in COVID-19 cases from the beginning of August.

Nikos Hardalias, Deputy Minister for Civil Protection and Crisis Management at the Ministry of Citizen Protection, announced that the closure of bars, restaurants imposed in several regions and islands including Mykonos and Santorini last week, is extended to Attika region as well.

A 10-day curfew, along with the mandatory use of masks is imposed on the islands of Paros and Antiparos in the Cyclades in both indoor and outdoor areas.

SANTIAGO -- Chile reported on Friday that the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the South American country has risen to 382,111, with 10,340 deaths.

According to the Health Ministry, in the previous 24 hours, tests detected 2,077 new cases and 41 more patients died of the virus.

Chilean health authorities said 355,037 people have recovered from the disease and 16,734 cases are considered active.

QUITO -- Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health reported on Friday that the country's total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has reached 99,409, with 6,030 deaths.

According to the health authorities, in the last 24 hours, the South American nation registered 1,066 new infections and 20 more deaths of COVID-19.

The country is still struggling to control the spread of the virus and is registering a growing number of infections, especially in the capital city of Quito in Pichincha province, the current epicenter of COVID-19 in Ecuador.

DOHA -- The Qatari Health Ministry on Friday announced 251 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 114,532, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

Meanwhile, 301 more recovered from the virus, bringing the total recoveries to 111,258, while the death toll remained 190, according to a ministry statement quoted by QNA.

The ministry attributed the increase in coronavirus infections to gatherings and visits as well as ignoring the preventive measures such as staying at home and social distancing.
