After experiencing an arduous journey, Chinese network dramas, a new kind of television series only available from online platforms, welcome a successful year.
Praised as the Chinese best crime drama of the year, the Day and Night highlights the criminal investigations with its sophisticated production and excellent acting skills.
Netflix, the US streaming media giant and the world's largest pay-video site, bought the copyright of Day and Night on November 30. Thus, the crime drama became the first Chinese online TV show going abroad. Due to different cultural backgrounds and language barriers, the acceptance of Chinese TV series by the international audience is not easy, especially those from western countries. But Day and Night did it.
The past ten years saw the big boom in Chinese online TV series, which have won the admiration from its audience in terms of quality and quantity.
Since the debut of the first online drama hip-hop quartet in 2009, the Chinese internet TV shows are no longer the funny situation comedies, a kind of sitcom without logical plots and proper themes, simply aiming at entertaining the audience.
By 2015, several hit dramas such as Guilty of Mind, Monster Killer and Fleet of Time brought the market back to the right track. In 2016, With You, Yu Zui, and Stand By Me made the market more mature. This year, Day and Night enjoys a good reputation of its higher quality.
Diverse themes and innovation
Compared with the traditional TV series, themes of network dramas have been largely extended because of different display platforms. From June to July 2017, a variety of online TV shows with topics such as ancient legends and romances, suspense, urban life, science fiction, detective reasoning, youth and campus, fantasy story and comedy were released.
And even different network dramas with the similar theme have different target audience.
Professional and sophisticated production
Due to insufficient funds, there were some goofs in the content at the early stage of online TV dramas. These goofs made the audience laugh and became jokes.
With the rapid development of online dramas, more and more traditional film and television companies began to produce net dramas. The moves not only have attracted more investment and people’s attention, but also brought more professional techniques to the new type of TV show. "Make it bigger and better" has become the goal of the next stage of drama development.
Day and Night is one of representative works. Guided by a professional lawyer, the script was completed three years ago. But it’s produced three years later with more efforts and money. In order to create a trilling scene of car crash, three real cars were damaged. It is absolutely impossible for the previous online dramas.
Precise casting
Cast member are the carrier of the TV show. A good actor or actress can enrich character and compact the storyline. In previous online dramas, the actors or actresses always perform exaggeratedly to cater to the audience. But in recent years, more and more unknown but well-performing actors or actresses appear like mushrooms after rain, such as Wang Longzheng in Guilty of Mind, Bai Jingting in Fleet of Time and Pan Yueming in Day and Night, who conquered the picky audience with their exquisite acting skills. This also marks the changes in the selection criteria in performers.
