Vietnam will temporarily suspend visa issuance for all foreign nationals for 30 days starting from Wednesday to curb the spread of novel coronavirus, Vietnam News Agency reported Tuesday.

This decision will not be applicable to entrants for diplomatic or official purposes, said a notice on the government website on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, those exempt from visa or possessing a visa exemption certificate issued for Vietnamese people living abroad and their family members and other exceptions including experts, corporate managers and skilled workers are required to have a certificate of testing negative for the virus to enter the country.

Besides cases of arrivals already subject to concentrated quarantine, people entering the country from the United States and European and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries are also required to be quarantined in concentrated facilities, said the notice, adding that relevant ministries are asked to consider and decide the place of landing for flights from epidemic-hit areas to Vietnam to ensure the smooth operation of quarantine for entrants.

Vietnam has banned foreign nationals coming from or having visited or transited via Schengen countries and Britain within 14 days prior to their expected arrival from entering the country for tourism, relative visit, study or other personal purposes, and has suspended visa-on-arrival for all foreigners.

To date, Vietnam has confirmed 66 cases of novel coronavirus infection, with 126 suspected cases and over 31,000 under quarantine, according to Vietnam's Ministry of Health.
