Steven Spielberg's latest sci-fi film "Ready Player One" surged past the 1 billion yuan mark at the Chinese box office on Sunday, according to Maoyan, a major Chinese film database.

The film, which hit Chinese screens on March 30, led the box office with nearly 397 million yuan (about 63 million U.S. dollars) in sales during the long holiday weekend, which ran from Thursday to Saturday.

The story is set in the year 2045, and focuses on a virtual-reality game called OASIS. The film features the adventures of five young players in both the virtual contest and in real life.

It scored 8.9 out of 10 points based on more than 300,000 reviews on Douban, a popular Chinese film rating platform.

According to Maoyan, box office sales for the film are expected to hit 1.3 billion yuan, which is subject to possible updates.
