Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida laid out his priorities for 2022 at his first news conference of the year on Tuesday, listing the Omicron variant as the most difficult challenge now facing his country.

Kishida also said that the government will decide next week whether to extend border controls, and he announced that he will abandon provisional plans to visit the United States and Australia for summit talks prior to the start of a regular Diet session in mid-January.
