Cultural exchanges vital to boost Nepal-China relations

Chinese and Nepali writers have highlighted the importance of literary and cultural exchanges in strengthening the friendly relationship between their two countries.

At a program organized in Kathmandu on Tuesday to welcome Zhang Jing, vice-president of Chinese Writers Association and his team, writers shared a common view that cultural ties between the two countries is very important.

Chancellor of Nepal Academy Bairagi Kaila said that literary and cultural exchanges also help to find ways to strengthen the historical relationship between Nepal and China.

"Cultural exchanges will help us to understand the cultural and literary activities between the two countries," Bairagi Kaila told Xinhua. "It will help to bring the countries together and strengthen the friendly relationship as well."

Vice-President of Chinese Writers Association Zhang Jing highlighted the importance of cultural agreement that was made last year between China and Nepal.

"Last year after the visit of Premier Wen Jiabao to Nepal, the governments of two sides have signed an agreement on cultural cooperation and in that agreement it is stated that both side should encourage these types of literature and cultural exchanges as well as mutual translation of excellent literature works," he said.

He said the agreement is significant in strengthening the cultural ties of the two countries.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Yang Houlan said that recent years have been fruitful for China and Nepal in cultural exchanges and cooperation.

"The activities such as culture festivals, photography exhibitions, art performance, and others are not only promoting the culture of two countries but also enhancing the friendly contact between our people," ambassador Houlan said.

This is the second time that Chinese Writers Association paid a goodwill visit to Nepal. Chinese writers will join various programs during their four-day goodwill visit.

The two countries marked 2012 as the China-Nepal Friendship Exchange Year.
