BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday called on China and Indonesia to focus on cooperation in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic and promoting development.

During a video meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Wang said currently COVID-19 was spreading globally, which endangered human health, impacted the world economy and threatened global stability.

He said in the fight against the pandemic, China and Indonesia have helped each other and effectively responded to the challenges of the epidemic, which further strengthened the political mutual trust between the two countries, promoted their traditional friendship and consolidated the foundation of bilateral ties.

The 70th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between China and Indonesia this year is a great opportunity for the two sides to build on this strong legacy and take it forward. The two countries should sum up successful experience and jointly plan for future cooperation, Wang said.

Against the backdrop of maintaining ongoing epidemic control measures, Wang called on the two sides to focus on cooperation in fighting the epidemic and promoting development, and in areas of vaccine research and development, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment production.

On the South China Sea issue, Wang said China was willing to work with ASEAN countries to implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), and advance consultations on a Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea.

For her part, Retno Marsudi said Indonesia attached great importance to strengthening cooperation with China, did not want to see the Asia-Pacific region being dragged into a new Cold War, and stood ready to work with China and other countries to jointly maintain regional security, stability and prosperity. ■
