Three men who attempted to hijack a plane in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in June, were sentenced to death on Tuesday.

Another attempted hijacker received a life sentence.

The foiled terrorist attack in the far Western region was one of China's most serious this year.

The sentences were given at first trial, at the Intermediate People's Court, in Hotan Prefecture.

The court ruled that the men were guilty of organizing, leading or participating in a terrorist group. They were also guilty of hijacking the plane and attempting to detonate explosives on it.

All confessed to the charges.

On June 29th, six people attempted to hijack a flight of Tianjin Airline that took off from Hotan Airport and was on its way to the regional capital of Urumqi.

They were stopped by crew members and passengers while they were trying to detonate explosive devices.

Two of the hijackers were injured in the fight and later died, despite medical treatment.

Twenty-four crew members and passengers were injured in the attack.
