A truck collided with five other vehicles in South Africa on Thursday night, killing at least 24 people and injuring about 80 others, local media reported.

The tragedy took place as the truck crashed into four minibus taxis and a car in the small city of Pinetown in the southeastern province of KuaZulu-Natal, the News24 reported.

Among the injured, seven of them were critically injured, and eight were seriously wounded, according to the report.

It was believed that the accident was caused by the failure of the truck's braking system. Police were investigating the fatal accident.

It is the latest fatal road accident in KuaZulu-Natal. On Sunday evening a bus carrying girls and their mothers on their way home from the reed dance event overturned in the same province, leaving at least 10 people dead and dozens of others injured.

In July this year, the KuaZula-Natal province lost 158 lives in road accidents.

In recent years, road accidents have become one of the biggest killers in South Africa. Ageing vehicles, bad roads, dim awareness of traffic safety and lax regulations are considered major contributors to the road death toll and disability.

On June 25, 2012, a bus with about 70 passengers plummeted off a bridge in the eastern province of Gauteng, killing at least 19 people.
