EU provides Sudan with €30 million in humanitarian funding

According to the European Union, more than 9 million people in Sudan are in need of humanitarian assistance.

The European Union (EU) has provided €30 million in humanitarian funding to go towards the providing aid to vulnerable people in Sudan.

The announcement of the funding comes after EU High Representative/Vice-President, Josep Borrell visited the country to assess EU aid projects.

"The European Union continues to stand in solidarity with the people in need in Sudan. Our humanitarian assistance notably helps children get access to education, which is crucial to build a better future. In time of crisis, it is fundamental that our humanitarian partners can fully exercise their lifesaving job. We welcome the recent positive steps taken by the Sudanese transitional government to ensure this," the bloc said in a statement.

The EU has provided nearly €550 million to Sudan to help cater for the needs of the most vulnerable people in the country.

Sudan's Darfur region has been dogged by conflict for years, killing tens of thousands.

The bloc says more than 9 million people in Sudan are in need of humanitarian assistance. It notes that nearly 2 million people living in displacement.

"Helping those most in need is our priority. Our new aid package will provide food and nutritional assistance, shelter, emergency healthcare, access to clean water, and education for children caught in humanitarian crises," said Janez Lenarčič, the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management.
