NEW DELHI, June 12 (APD) -The Delhi police is working towards enhancing women safety in the capital by ensuring that the travel routes that women take from work to office are safe.

In the context, the police recently spoke to the Delhi government’s transport department for improving last-mile connectivity services.

Speaking to the Indian media, the police commissioner of Delhi, Amulya Patnaik said that police had identified some travel routes in the city, which were frequently used by women while returning home from work.

He said, “If there is last-mile connectivity it becomes an advantage. We are also working to ensure that all such areas have CCTV cameras and are properly lit. Crimes tend to happen in dark stretches. We are in touch with all agencies to have well lit areas.”

Patnaik informed that since the beginning of the month of June, the police had started patrolling on cycles in parks and other places where women joggers and senior citizens spend their time.

“This is the first time police have eyes inside such parks. Our men cycle around parks to ensure that women are not harassed. We will increase the strength of cycle patrols in the coming days,” he added.

He also said that crimes like rape could be prevented if all agencies work together. “More than 96% rapes in Delhi are committed by those known to the women and minor girls. It is a social problem. Respect for the opposite sex should be taught from childhood.”

The commissioner said families and schools must encourage that a child learns to value and respect women. Such awareness campaigns should be conducted extensively in under privileged areas around the city, he added.
