Sri Lanka's Prime Minister inspects work on Chinese funded port city

COLOMBO, Jan 2. (APD) -- Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday inspected the progress of work on a major port city being constructed in Colombo with Chinese assistance.

The Prime Minister and other government officials visited the site of the construction work and received an update on the project.

The Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka accompanied the Prime Minister and discussed matters related to the project.

According to the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, the construction of three 60 storied towers will begin at the site of the project this year.

A total of around 269 hectares of sea is being filled by a Chinese company to create the new city and part of it will be developed by the government and the rest by the Chinese company.

More than 50 percent of the reclamation work has been completed for the project.

Once the reclamation work is over, the President will declare the new land as part of Sri Lanka and as a special urban development area.

The Prime Minister’s office is at present working on the legal system which will apply to the new property which will be part of the Port City.
